We all know that Retinol is one of the most effective ingredient in skincare, regardless the strength. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that has long been used for anti-ageing for decades. It does this by stimulating the metabolism of skin cells and encourage collagen giving skin's texture a smoother and more even-toned look and feel.
Medik8 has released a new product called Crystal Retinal 6 (Stable Retinal Night Serum Super-Strength Vitamin A). In other words a 'supercharged' anti-ageing miracle! Formulated with retinaldehyde, Crystal Retinal works in synergy with the skin's natural mechanism to enhance collagen production and speed up cellular turnover.
Clinically proven to be faster than retinol, this ground-breaking night serum helps firm, plump and resurface skin as well as visibly minimising fine lines and wrinkles and deliver a more youthful-looking even-toned complexion.
So what is the difference between retinol and retinal?
Non-prescription Retinol works in much the same way as retinal, however it needs to be converted into retinoic acid by the skin before it can take effect, a process that requires a two-step conversion. Retinol must first be converted to retinaldehyde and then to retinoic acid within the skin, which can take months to see results. With Crystal Retinal, it only requires one conversion to retinoic acid meaning it can deliver results 11 times faster.
Crystal Retinal 6 has a patented time-release delivery system to ensure that the ingredients is released slowly and steadily throughout the night, meaning it won't overwhelm the skin. Because of retinaldehyde's antibacterial properties, it will also help skin that is prone to breakouts.
Already a user of a retinol based serum that is mild and with low levels of retinol, I was eager to try a product that was stronger. I tested Crystal Retinal 6 for about a month. It's has a lightweight and luxurious texture with the serum instantly absorbing into the skin. I started using it every third night for the first two weeks and then increased it to every second night. At around 6 weeks I will then start to use this product every night.
It's been four weeks and I have started to see results. Smoothness in my skin is evident as well as less congestion on my forehead. I also found the wrinkles have significantly reduced on my forehead and between the brows, with skin looking brighter as well.
Retinal products are not to be used without caution. If you have never used products with Vitamin A, a patch test is compulsory. It's not a product you apply liberally before moisturiser and that's it. As a Rosacea sufferer I have to be very careful how I apply skincare. Instructions are there for a reason. Because it is such a powerful product you need to introduce it into your skincare regime. The best way to do so without shocking your skin is use it every third night for about a month and then gradually increase the use. You want the product to work for you not against you.
Overall, I am still using this serum and love the results so far. This is a long-term use product and I can see myself purchasing this in the future to continue use.
