What is Double Cleansing? As the name suggests, is a two-step process that involves cleansing skin twice.

We all know that washing your face has always been the crucial step in skin prep. It doesn't matter how expensive your cleanser is, if you don't cleanse properly, residue of oil, pollution and dirt will build up on the skin resulting in congested and dull complexion. So why double cleansing?

The first cleanse removes everything from the skins surface that you've collected throughout the day including makeup, SPF, sweat, bacteria and dead skin cells with the second cleanse should be a deeper water or milk based product that works at a deeper level and cleans impurities within the pores. Each cleanse compliments the other and works together to remove surface impurities, re-hydrate the skin and control the skins pH levels.

You don't have to double cleanse every morning and evening. This is something that is vital at the end of the day to wash away all the impurities that has been accumulated throughout the day. Your skin does it's magic while you sleep to repair and rejuvenate itself so when you wake up you only need to cleanse once.

The First Cleanse
The first cleanse is designed to wipe away the day’s build up without stripping the skin, that’s why it is imperative to choose the right cleanser and one that won’t strip your skin of its PH level and natural oils.

I use the Eye and Lip Cleanser which is an oil based cleanser that instantly dissolves stubborn make-up and removes any surface impurities, leaving skin feeling smooth and nourished. Contains ingredients that is gentle for the eye area like Hydrogenated Coconut Oil - which liquefies and removes eye make-up and lipstick, Lanolin and Squalane.

Make sure to massage the cleanser in for a minute to thoroughly remove make-up, toxins, pollution and build-up, taking the full minute to cleanse will see you reap the benefits from the product and its ingredients.

The Second Cleanse
The second cleanse is designed to purify the pores and prepare the skin for the products to follow, once all the surface impurities have been removed by your oil based cleanser your second cleanser will now clean deeper while thoroughly nourishing your complexion. It is important to use a gel or water-soluble cream based cleanser with ingredients that best suit your specific skin type depending on specific oily, dry, acne prone or sensitive skin.

As the season has already change I have already switched to a milk cleanser - the Lait A Démaquiller Cleansing Milk, which is suitable for dry and dehydrated skin.  Contains nourishing ingredients like Peanut Oil which is rich in vitamins A & E and Lanolin to protect the skin's natural barrier and prevents moisture loss. I massage this cleanser into my skin and use either a cleansing sponge or cloth in warm water to remove the cleanser.  My Skin is left soft and cleansed without stripping any excess oils.

Is it possible to over cleanse?
While skin needs to be cleansed twice a day, a double cleanse may not always be necessary and is more suited to your evening routine. As previously mentioned a single cleanse when you wake up in the morning will prepare your skin to absorb day creams and moisturisers.

'Over cleansing can lead to dryness and irritation,' says Gina Cook National Training Manager at Ella Baché. It's important to make sure that your cleanser contains nourishing ingredients that will maintain your skins natural oils.

You may be double cleansing already without knowing it! If you use cleansing wipes or cleansing oils, ensure that whatever you use is suited to your skin for the season. Different skin types will respond better to different cleansers and it's often down to personal preference but the key is to be gentle. If you don't double cleanse, give it a go.  See the difference in your skin tone, clarity and health especially when applying your skincare and makeup.
