REVIEW: BRIGHTENING SKINCARE WITH ELEMIS AND ANTIPODES

Skin whitening and/or brightening products have been around for a long time and becoming more popular with the broader population as we are all discovering, the lighter the skin the younger we look!

If you’ve ever wondered about how to brighten skin, it’s important to understand that there are more uses for skin brightening products than just making your complexion lighter. Skin brightening products can reduce the appearance of age spots as well as skin pigmentation.

During my pregnancy I developed hyper-pigmentation on my forehead and cheeks and have struggled finding products to fade them unless it was prescribed with intense chemical ingredients. I'm not sure why but it is quite common for women to develop hyper-pigmentation during pregnancy, so it's not just an ageing thing!

How Do They Work?
Everyone has some level of melanin in the skin. When you go out in the sun your skin produces more melanin to protect itself from the sun’s harmful rays. Also, as you age, concentrated spots of melanin can create age spots.

Skin brightening products can be a potential solution, because it works by inhibiting the production of melanin in skin cells. As you use skin brighteners, the amount of melanin in your skin will become reduced and your skin will look lighter, in the same way that a tan eventually fades.

What to Look for in a Skin Brightening Product
There are many different ingredients that have the ability to lighten skin, whether you want chemical based or natural based products, both types can provide the same result.

So whether you need to lighten freckles, hyper-pigmentation or age spots, skin brightening products do just that, giving you smoother, brighter skin and lessening dark spots caused by sun damage and scarring.

Here are two branded products that can assist you achieving the results.

Elemis White Brightening Even Tone Cleanser

The White Brightening Even Tone Cleanser is a foaming cleanser that gently removes impurities, reduces excess oil and reveals a super-clean and mattified complexion. The unique ELEMIS Brightening Complex of Daisy, encapsulated Vitamin C, Sophora and Kiwi extracts target the appearance of skin discolouration and age spots. Skin is left smoother, brighter and naturally illuminated.

The product comes in a gorgeous powder blue metallic pump bottle. The packaging is clean and luxurious. Two pumps and the right amount of foaming cleanser is dispensed. With a little water and rub palms together to produce plentiful of creamy cleanser and then massage gently over wet skin.

The White Brightening Even Tone Cleanser has a subtle scent that is quite pleasant.  Skin feels soft and soothed after cleansing.

Remember that brightening products work best when you use it as per instructions, including when they recommend it to be used in conjunction with other products. Also important to remember always use sunblock with any brightening products that you use.

Elemis has three products in the Brightening range.

Antipodes Apostle Skin Brightening Serum

Here's a product that has intrigued me, a water-based corrective serum designed to treat hyper-pigmentation and restore skin tone.

Using Waiwera Artesian Water (WAI means ‘water’ in Māori, the language of the indigenous people of New Zealand and WERA means ‘hot’. Together, they make up WAIWERA). Apparently it's the oldest water in the world.

It helps correct dull, blemished or uneven skin while restoring essential moisture.  Clinically proven that Vinanza performance plus (also know as kiwifruit skin) helps minimise facial redness and discolouration.

These are pretty big claims especially for a well trusted reputable brand, thus the reason why I'm intrigued.

My first impressions of the product is the scent is divine. It has a fruity smell but I cannot pinpoint the scent, it is something I have smelt before but I don't know where. It is quite pleasant and I can't help but sniff it!  The colour surprised me, it is a dark reddish brown which is a colour I don't normally relate to serums.

I trialled the product for almost three weeks. I started to use it everyday morning and night. 1-2 drops is enough for the entire face.

Around the second week my skin became noticeable brighter and smoother. The pigmentation I have on the side of cheeks and forehead have started to fade. With continued use I believe it will finally be gone!  I'm really liking the texture of my skin as well, it feels soft and smooth.

Below are before and after shots of my skin.

Overall Impression
I will continue to use the serum long term as I want to lighten the pigmentation on my skin and this will take time. I am however, extremely happy with the overall smoothness and appearance of my skin.

To achieve optimum results when using any brightening products it is essential to have more than one beauty product that assists in brightening.  You don't need to buy the entire collection from the one brand, it is ok to mix and match and choose what is suitable for your needs.
